This depends on where you will be surfing. Follow the temperature recommendation that reflects the temperature water you will be suring in. If in doubt - try All Degrees Seas. This works wonderfully in most sea temperatures.
The cooler the water the softer the wax. If you use soft wax in a warm climate it will melt. If you use wax designed for warm climates in cool water it will harden. Both will result in a slippery deck.
When you buy a new board, prior to your first surf.
Each time you surf apply a fresh layer.
When you surf in a different sea temperature - generally with changes of season or overseas surf trips.
When the wax builds up and the colour becomes more obvious, it's a good time to remove the wax and start again.
There are a few methods to get the ball rolling, and there are many videos on Youtube you can watch to learn this. Ultimately, you just rub it over the deck in a circular motion until you are happy with the layer you have created. You will be surprised how well it works.
Over time you will figure out the best method for your style.
The quick answer is No. Our waxes will work perfectly well without a base coat or top coat, but with experience, you may like to add these to your toolkit.
